I didn’t know how many goats my land could hold. At first I thought I had plenty of land and could buy lots of goats. Then I watched some videos and started thinking I had too little. Only Jolene’s book finally showed me how many goats I can actually keep here so they all stay healthy and comfortable.

When we were thinking about getting goats, we had so many questions. How do we protect them from predators? Can you keep a goat inside the house like a dog? How can you tell if she’s pregnant? How do you feed her properly? How do you make sure she doesn’t eat something she shouldn’t? Thanks to Jolene’s book, we no longer doubt we’ll do it right. Thank you, Jolene. You helped us start our little goat farm.

I couldn’t figure out which breed to get, and that was a big problem, because the information out there is so scattered. The book helped me finally make the right choice, and sort out all the other questions that come up when you’re just getting started with goats.

I didn’t understand what feed would really cost, how to build a proper fence, or how to house goats so they wouldn’t get sick or spread disease where they live. I didn’t know what routine health checks they needed, either. It all seemed so complicated, and it would have taken forever to learn. Now I have a detailed guide that tells me exactly what to do and when. It’s hard to make mistakes when you’re following clear, reliable facts.

When we decided to get goats, we didn’t know how to approach it. Just a couple of goats for ourselves, or a real farm that could pay? We couldn’t figure out where to draw the line. The book helped us put together a plan we can actually follow. Now we understand kidding, caring for the kids, how many kids to expect, how many goats to plan for, how to keep them, and roughly what it all costs. We could weigh every option and choose what’s best for us. And now we have 42 goats.
— Andy and Joanna

Our biggest fear was getting an animal and losing it just because we didn’t know enough. That’s why we couldn’t take the plunge for years. It’s a huge responsibility. With Jolene’s book, everything went smoothly, and we haven’t lost a single animal. Our farm has only grown since then.

I had no idea how much care goats need. What vaccinations? What can they eat? How do you trim their hooves? What parasites can they get? So many questions without answers, and all the information was scattered, so I had to keep everything in my head. Now, with the handy reminders in the book, we know what to do, how to do it, and in what order.

Who wrote this book
I didn’t grow up on a farm.
I came to the ranch when I married Randy. He got the land from his father, and the sheep, and everything his father knew. I had nothing like that. When the goats came, I started them from zero.
So I learned the way most of you will: by doing the work every day, and by getting things wrong. I’m not a vet. Every time this book gets close to medicine, it sends you to yours.
— Jolene
Questions, answered honestly
The things people ask me before they buy.
Can I keep just one goat?
No, please don’t. Goats need other goats. A lonely goat yells, and your neighbors will hear it. Start with two.
I’ve never kept animals before.
Neither had I. That’s exactly who this book is for.
Is it for dairy goats or meat goats?
Both. Breeds, feeding, kidding and health are for every goat. There’s a whole chapter on milk for those who milk.
Is a paper book coming in the mail?
No. It’s a PDF. Print the record cards and checklists you want for the barn.
Is this a vet book?
No. You won’t find medicine names or doses. You’ll find what to watch for and when to call your vet.
I’m not good with computers.
